Autistic Spectrum Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in children
Autistic Spectrum Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in children are diagnosed after referral by the school. This is because the service can reject referrals that do not provide the full assessment of educational difficulties that are the key feature of ASD and ADHD. GPs do not have this information, and do not have any faster or “backdoor” access to the service. Speak to your child’s school.
Autistic Spectrum Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in adults
Autistic Spectrum Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in adults (who haven’t already had a diagnosis in childhood) is diagnosed by the Adult Neurodevelopment unit. Waiting times are currently 3 to 5 years, the team cannot expedite appointments and will reject referrals made just out of diagnostic curiosity; there needs to be a significant impairment in your ability to function in at least two areas (family life, work, education, self-care, social life, risk taking) and a goal to achieve from the referral (such as to make changes to allow you to gain employment). Before seeing your GP please write down how you are affected and how referral might help you, and complete these questionnaires and bring them to the appointment www.nice.org.uk/guidance/cg142/resources/autism-spectrum-quotient-aq10-test-pdf-186582493 (EXTERNAL PDF LINK) and hadd.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/adhd-questionnaire-ASRS111.pdf (EXTERNAL PDF LINK). Even without a diagnosis you can access courses and support groups at cwmind.org.uk/cass-adults
